I understand and agree with those saying that a PC is not the best solution for playing live. I am lately using Ownhammer IRs which in my opinion are quite a leap from the ones shipping with S-Gear.
I use an Apogee Duet and a Macbook Pro, and even if it's 4 years old, I still get a very low latency and an acceptable CPU usage. I will also record an album using only S-Gear running into Mainstage 3. I was kinda skeptical about it, then I decided to give it a try and now all my tube stuff is for sale. Just wanted to share my experience with S-Gear. I have never owned an Axe-FX so I apologize if jump into this thread with limited arguments. Grab a chord and wiggle it like Jimi and see the wheels wiggle along with your fingers. You can strum a chord and see an analog style tuner wheel (in the style of a strobe tuner) for each string that is vibrating.
I used to think my TC Polytune was the best tuner ever. The best guitar tuner ever is in the Midi Guitar app which is guitar to midi for playing synths with the guitar. I like to feed S-Gear into Logic's Delay Designer which is fancy tapped delays with pitch shifters which can make some interesting texture loops. I use it mostly inside of Logic X any more where I can use Logic's pedal board in front of it because S-Gear has no stomp boxes. Flip through the IRs, you can hear the paper in the 40 year old speaker cones and the wood in the cabinets. Dig in the pick it doesn't just get louder, it reacts like a real guitar amp, tubes and transformers groaning under the load. But S-Gear is the one I use every day any more. I still use Amplitube and Guitar Rig sometimes and will definitely check out ReValver IV when it comes out. Then I A/B'd it to S-Gear through a pair of Focals and now my 11R is retired and for sale. I was so happy with my Eleven Rack that I said I would not be surprised to still be using it in 10 years. It all really depends on how you want to play the game. Others may have totally the opposite choices for recording and gigging.
I must say for quick recordings etc., I will tend to steer towards S-Gear as it just plugs into a DAW, and I can get nearly the same versatility as the Axe-FX by chaining it to different AU plugins for effects etc.įor playing out at gigs, I tend to take the Axe-FX because it is just to portable and I really only need the Axe-FX and a CLR monitor. The infinite routing possibilities are outstanding. It even surpasses Amplitube's selection of pedals and cabs. Just can't beat the 'all in one' flexibility. Where the Axe-FX wins hands down is the sheer versatility - with the effects blocks etc. Like the Axe-FX, you can have custom IRs and upload third party IRs etc. Ok, it's 4 amps as opposed to ~ 100, but those 4 are VERY good. S-Gear gets pretty close to the great tones of the Axe-FX. Therefore, proceed at your own risk.Īpologies OP - I realised I didn't answer your last question.
